The McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle is an all-weather airplane, designed by American aircraft manufacturer McDonnell Douglas in the 1970s. Produced with more than a thousand copies, it is mainly used by the US Air Force (USAF), but it has also been exported to some countries , including Israel and Japan , the latter having even built it under license. A specialized version of the ground attack was also developed, the F-15E Strike Eagle .

Beginning in the mid – 1960s, the US Air Force undertook a series of studies to develop a new combat aircraft under the FX designation. While the United States ‘ engagement in the Vietnam war was increasing, the limits of aircraft in service, and in particular the lack of close combat capability of the F-4 Phantom (which did not even have an internal cannon ) vis-a-vis the agile Mig North Vietnamese, were becoming more and more obvious. The development of a new generation of Soviet fighters only exacerbated the need for the USAF to have a new aircraft.
